THE 60-SECOND READ

Organizations keep making the same two mistakes with AI: they forget the humans who have to work with the technology, and they mistake chat tools for the whole field. The keynote’s core argument: only around 10% of the world’s data lives on the internet, and the real value sits in the other 90%, inside sensors, enterprise systems, and physical infrastructure. Sand’s answer, unveiled on stage: sense it, analyze it, and act on it.

“You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.”
Robert Solow, quoted on stage by Fred Swaniker

Notes

The keynote’s structure moved from diagnosis to demonstration. After the two-mistakes framing, the stage turned into a live proof of the sense-analyze-act loop: a demonstration of Fred’s own digital twin built on a knowledge graph, followed by a continuous glucose monitor worn on stage, used to make the point that sensing without acting captures no value at all.

The infrastructure argument was grounded in delivery work: a digital twin built with the City of St. Louis water utility, serving roughly 300,000 customers with aging pipes and a lean workforce, and an end-to-end digital twin of a wastewater treatment works, where treatment consumes up to 30% of a municipality’s energy pool and emits nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide.

The closing turn was deliberate: after announcing two products, the speech circled back to its own opening warning about forgetting the humans, and landed the third announcement, Frontier Institute of Technology, as the “act” layer of the framework. Sense with the Sensor Store, analyze with SandOS, act through people.
